Along with this excursion, we invite you to a lecture on Monday, September 9th, from 17.00 to South Hall 2B. The electrodialysis technology at Dolní Rožínka is the first and oldest reference of MEGA Water treatment from the uranium mining industry. Still in operation, its origins date back to the early 1980s. Uranium ore mining at this site started in 1957. The chemical plant has been in operation since 1968. However, it no longer processes uranium ore into a chemical concentrate – ammonium diuranate, but elution of U-metal sorbed on ion exchangers of decontamination stations during mine water treatment is still carried out. In the technological process of cleaning the tailings pond water of the plant, sodium sulfate is obtained as a by-product. Industrial electrodialysis technology has been operated at GEAM since 1989 thanks to MEGA. The tailings pond at Dolní Rožínka has a total volume of up to 14 million m3. The original salinity of the water in the tailings pond was 30 g/l. Electrodialysis with pre-treatment in the form of reverse osmosis has a design capacity of 33 m3/h, but at the current salinity of “only” 20 g/l it is able to process up to 40 m3/h. Theoretically, it would be possible to gradually “dry out” the entire tailings pond within 7-8 years, but it is awaited how the strategic issue of opening the deposit in nearby Brzkov will be resolved.
